It helps to confirm that you are eligible to win the scholarship before you start anything else.

If you’re going to join a financial institution, you might as well join one that supports its members.
Is There an Essay?
Yes! And before you groan, take a breath. This doesn’t have to be a daunting experience like a big English paper or a standardized test.
All you need to do is write a 400-600 word essay on how you’ve made an impact through community service. Think of it as a chance to highlight something meaningful you’ve done that represents who you are, what you care about, and how you help others.
Many students, and people in general, underestimate how powerful their everyday experiences can be. You don’t need to have founded a nonprofit or organized a citywide fundraiser. Maybe you helped tutor other students, volunteered at a food pantry, or spent the weekends serving with your youth group. What matters most is the sincerity behind your actions and your ability to reflect on why it matters to you.
Once you have your idea, it’s time to start writing. Start with something that draws the reader in. It can be a moment, a memory, or a realization, but it needs to be a something that will “hook” the reader and get them excited to read more.
Then take the time to explain what you did, why, and what you learned. We want to hear your voice, not a template. If you can be clear, honest, and thoughtful, you’re on the right track
After writing, revise, revise, revise. Proofreading is important to catch any mistakes or rework what you want to say. Asking a parent, friend, or teacher to look it over also helps catch anything you might have missed or offer ideas that you didn’t think.
And that’s all! The most important thing is that you wrote an essay that you feel confident about.
Do You Need Perfect Grades?
While the minimum GPA is a 3.0, academic performance is only one part of the bigger picture. The Ignite My Future Scholarship places a much stronger weight on your service involvement and the essay.
FFCCU is built on the philosophy of people helping people, and that’s what we want to reward students who embody that idea. The selection committee is looking for applicants who demonstrate compassion and a genuine desire to support their communities. Not all achievers look the same on paper. We know that dedication outside the classroom can speak just as loudly as your grades inside it.
What Counts as Volunteer Experience?
There is no “right” way to serve your community. What matters is consistent, meaningful involvement!
Past winners helped organizations like Big Brother Mentorship, the Special Olympics, Arrupe Summer Program, Boy and Girl Scouts of America, Youth Challenge, Habitat for Humanity, and more. Check out the 2025 winners!
The scholarship is open to a wide range of volunteer work including school-based service projects, community outreach through local clubs, or involvement with charities or neighborhood initiatives.
As part of your application, you’ll need to list the organizations you’ve volunteered with, the dates you served, the roles you’ve taken on, the number of hours you’ve contributed, an a primary contact name and number that can verify your involvement. This helps the committee understand the scope and impact of your service.
When is the Deadline?
Applications are due on January 31, 2026. While that might sound far away, it always arrives faster than expected. Giving yourself enough time to gather materials and revise your essay will make the entire process feel much more doable.
When you’re ready to submit, you’ll need the following:
- Your FFCCU membership number
- Your academic transcript or report card showing your cumulative GPA
- Your full volunteer list
- Your 400-600 word essay
- Your completed application
